Kevin Mayo was born in Stirling, Scotland in 1964. He studied music at Edinburgh University gaining BMus.(Hons) and MMus in composition.
Kevin studied composition with Kenneth Leighton and Peter Nelson and subsequently completed his studies at the Royal College of Music in London, spending a further year studying composition with George Benjamin and improvisation with John Lambert
The orchestral work Daydreams in Darkness was first performed by the RSNO in the 1993 IBM Yong Composers competition. The 9-player work Walking a Möbius Strip was selected for performance in the International Gaudeamus Week of 1995 in The Netherlands and has received various subsequent performances.

Lots of little black dots for piano and Metropolis for 5 players were both performed in different years at the ECAT young composer's forum.
The wind orchestra piece Spectral, commissioned by ECAT, was selected by the international jury of the ISCM for performance at the ISCM World Music Week in Manchester 1998 and has received various other performances.
The chamber piece Music for Insomniacs was first performed at the 1996 BBC Proms by players of the BBC Symphony Orchestra who also gave the first performance of the large-scale orchestral work Entranced, subsequently broadcast on BBC Radio 3's 'Hear and Now'.
Most recently, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra commissioned The Kingmakers, which was toured by the SCO and has already received 6 performances.
